In the past God spoke to ourforefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom heappointed heir of all things, and through whom he made theuniverse. The Son is the radiance of God""""s glory and the exactrepresentation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerfulword. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down atthe right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
Since the children have fleshand blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death hemight destroy him who holds the power of death--that is, thedevil--and free those who all their lives were held in slavery bytheir fear of death.
For the word of God is livingand active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates evento dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges thethoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Therefore, since we have agreat high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Sonof God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do nothave a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as weare--yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of gracewith confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace tohelp us in our time of need.
During the days of Jesus"""" lifeon earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries andtears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heardbecause of his reverent submission. Although he was a son, helearned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, hebecame the source of eternal salvation for all who obeyhim.
Therefore let us leave theelementary teachings about Christ and go on tomaturity.
It is impossible for those whohave once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, whohave shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of theword of God and the powers of the coming age, if they fall away, tobe brought back to repentance, because to their loss they arecrucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him topublic disgrace.
Therefore he is able to savecompletely those who come to God through him, because he alwayslives to intercede for them.
This is the covenant I willmake with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. Iwill put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. Iwill be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will a manteach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, """"Know the Lord,""""because they will all know me, from the least of them to thegreatest. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remembertheir sins no more.
How much more, then, will theblood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himselfunblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead todeath, so that we may serve the living God!
In fact, the law requires thatnearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the sheddingof blood there is no forgiveness.
Just as man is destined to dieonce, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificedonce to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear asecond time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those whoare waiting for him.
